The famed recording studio of the Beatles has been put up for sale by EMI. EMI, the british record company who has owned the studio since the days of the Beatles has fallen on hard financial times, and is looking to move the historic studio.
The music giant EMI is said to need more than $165 million dollars to last through the year, and the hope is the sale of the studio can generate $10 – $20 million for the cash strapped company. Radiohead and the Rolling Stones have recently quit the label due to cutbacks due to the companies poor financial state.
While most recording studios remain anonymous, the Abbey Road studio has attained worldwide fame, due largely in part to the Beatles recordings of the 1960s. Built in a Georgian town house in London’s St. John’s Wood neighborhood, EMI constructed the world’s first custom-built recording studio inside in 1931.
The Beatles weren’t the only group creating timeless albums at Abbey Road. Other classics recorded at the Abbey Road studios include Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Wish You Were Here”, Radiohead’s “The Bends” and ”OK Computer”.
We have been thumbing through our financial statements trying to prepare a bid for the studio, but we came up a few million short. Maybe next time.
