Ben Harper & Relentless7 – White Lies for Dark Times Album Review

white-lies-for-dark-times-ben-harper-relentless-7jpgWhen I think about Ben Harper, the first things that usually come to mind are hemp necklaces and the D chord .  When I heard he had a new backing band with a big power blues sound, I did something I have never done before; actually listened to a Ben Harper album.

Truth be told, the CD is actually quite enjoyable, certainly exceeding my expectations.  The music is very raw and potent, and it is very clear that this disc was meant to be played very loud.   With the exception of a few tracks, Ben is able to leave behind the cheesy balladry that often plagues some of his earlier efforts.   It is a straight up rock album with a lot of energy and drive.  The new backing band  ” The Relentless7″ (just 3 guys, not seven) clearly bring a lot to this recording, as the musicianship takes center stage.  The high point on the CD, “Lay there and hate me”, is a burner if there ever was one and is just begging to be played live.

The album is full of screaming guitar licks and Ben Harpers more than capable slide guitar.  While “White Lies”, isn’t breaking any new ground, this is a solid disc with a handful of really good rock tunes.
