Neutral Milk Hotel Reunion

When Jeff Mangum rose from his self imposed obscurity during Occupy Wall Street, few predicted it would result in a full blown Neutral Milk Hotel reunion. While the aforementioned “full blown” depiction is up for debate, the fact remains that the band has announced their first dates since 1998. While rumors of a full slate of international dates are in the air, we have at least five confirmed NMH dates on the books.

Mavis Staples New Album & Song

Looks like the dream team of Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy will continue their collaboration on Staples new album entitled, One True Vine. The album will be released on June 25th and feature Funkadelic and Low cover songs, as well as original tunes written specifically for the legendary soul singer by Tweedy and Nick Lowe. The National New Album & Song

Laura Marling “Where Can I Go”

Laura Marling will release her new album Once I Was An Eagle on May 28th in the US and from the sounds of things it’ll be a good one. Marling’s first official single “Where Can I Go?” can be heard below plus you can watch a live performance of fellow new track “Pray For Me” that was previewed last year for WNYC.

The Avett Brothers Rock Fallon

The Avett Brothers left it all out on the floor during their 4 minute performance on Late NIght with Jimmy Fallon the other night. Did someone tell them their lives depended on this performance, because I have seen them rock but this was on a new level. They kick it off with old favorite “Kick Drum Heart,” which featured a nice little guitar solo from Seth and then finished up with “Geraldine” off their new album The Carpenter. A lot has been said about the brothers being out-played at the 2011 Grammys but this performance shows they can really bring it. Their spring tour kicks off in April and we highly recommend checking them out on the road.

Broken Social Scene One Night Reunion

Although it’s rare that the members of Broken Social Scene can all get together to perform, the band recently announced that they will be co-headlining the new Field Trip Music & Arts Festival. Taking place in Toronto on June 8th other acts include, Feist (no surprise here), Bloc Party, Cold Specks, Timber Timbre, Hayden, Ra Ra Riot, Zeus and Trust. SInce the festival celebrates the 10th anniversary of BSS’s label Arts & Crafts, it seems fitting that the band come out for the occasion. New David Bowie Album + Single

On a day where I thought the only David Bowie related news would be that of his Birthday, the White Duke comes out and announces his first new album in over a decade, The Next Day. The official statement from Team Bowie goes something like this, “David is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants… when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. Today he definitely has something to say.” Put us firmly in the camp of those who can’t wait to hear what he has to say.

The album will be released in March, but you can check out the first single now below. I’ve got a feeling you will want to spend some time with this one.

Jay Farrar Memoir Due in March

Jay Farrar of Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt/New Multitudes fame has written a memoir, Falling Cars and Junkyard Dogs due in stores this spring. Described as a collection of “beautifully crafted autobiographical vignettes”, one can only hope for some pretty cool tales about the ins and outs of some bands that have been indie rock mainstays. As far as I am concerned, there aren’t enough well written books about this particular walk of life. I’m looking forward to what I have a feeling will be a great read.
