Moonlighting as a musician, Jason Swartzman and his one man band Coconut Records has turned out a very enjoyable listen full of catchy hooks, witty lyrics, and poppy melodies. If you can get past the very bizarre album covers, you are in for a treat.
While “Max Fischer’s” latest opus may not be Beethoven’s 5th, it is certainly a good, fun listen. The album is short and sweet, clocking in at about 30 minute mark. Just ten tracks, the album avoids the filler and turns in a quick listen, reminiscent of Weezer’s Green Album.
While the album is missing the powerhouse tracks of its predecessor “Nightiming”(West Coast, Nightiming, It’s Not You It’s Me), it works better as a whole. This album is more succinct and feels more complete. This album is not without its standouts, namely the blues shuffle turned singalong “Wires”, sunny “The Summer”, and the albums opener “Microphone”.
A significant upgrade from his last album “Nightiming”, and certainly better than anything during from the Phantom Planet days, this 60s pop style album is what it is; a quick and enjoyable collection of simple, acoustic guitar based pop tunes.
