Nothing Rusty About Doves’ Latest
For years now I have been referring to Doves as the most underrated band out. “Kingdom of Rust” just furthers my claim. The English rock trio has put out a solid LP packed full of hits while still keeping true to their anti-single style.
One of the reasons I dig this band so much is that there are not many bands putting out 4, 5, 6 minute songs with the depth of a Doves song. A lot of their best songs are right around five minutes or longer. The 2 or 3 minute songs are usually the throw aways.
Now there is nothing wrong with shorter songs. Of course not. But it would seem to me that creating multi-layered longer songs would be much harder than coming up with a good diddy. I’m not trying to shit on diddys because The Beatles put out a ton of diddys and they are considered to be the best band ever. I love diddies too. But when you are trying to do something different and utilize a discipline to add depth to your songs, that is a rare quality in bands these days. Especially when the radio’s not playing 4, 5, or 6 minute songs.
The self titled track is probably one of the greatest rock tunes to come out in the past five years and it’s over five minutes long. “House of Mirrors” is classic Doves while “Compulsion” just makes me want to dance. The Doves have a talent for conveying quality and depth in their music, and “Kingdom of Rust” is no exception. Go buy it!
