First Listen – MGMT’s Congratulations

MGMT broke through to mainstream audiences and critics alike with 2008′s Oracular Spectacular, but what does the future hold for their latest release, Congratulations? The album, which is set to be released on 4/13 was recently leaked, prompting the band to post the album in it’s entirety for free streaming on their website. After a first listen the album is – interesting to say the least.

We will give the album a proper review when we give it a few more turns and let it all set in, but for now, lets get the conversation going. What do you guys think?

This is hipster B.S. at its finest.

I was kind of onboard until I heard Siberian Breaks. What is that all about? I imagine about 90% of the world is skipping that one right now. The title track is good though.

    Great. Awesome. Spectacular. Wonderful.

At least it was free! There are a few good songs on here. Not bad overall.

I like it about as much as I like that stupid album cover.

I have listened to this several times now. I feel like there are some good moments, but overall I am not a fan. My favorite tracks are “It’s Working”, “Someone’s Missing”, and “Congratulations”. But even on those tracks, there are parts that lose me.

Why bother listening. An album like this will good good reviews across the board no matter what. From that first single I want no part in it.
