The second LP from the Morning Benders marks the pairing of the sunny low-fi pop sound of the San Francisco Bay with the intricate production of the new “Brooklyn Sound”. Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor co-produced the album is likely responsible for the latter, filling the album with textured soundscapes and intricate arrangements. The band’s easy breezy sound is a perfect fit for this slick production, resulting in a very good listen.
The album is short and sweet with a running time just under 40 minutes. The excellent lead single “Excuses” gets the album off to a great start, with three more standout tracks right behind it. Outside of the standout summertime jam “All Day Day Light”, the album fades a bit in the second half, but given the album’s very solid start that is understandable.
“Big Echo” manages to walk the line between being complex and being accessible; remaining a very fun and easy album to listen to throughout. The albums high points alone warrant a listen, but in the end the album works even better as a whole.
