Video: Trampled By Turtles “Rebellion (Lies)”
By now we’ve all seen and heard of the AV Club’s Undercover series where they have bands cover popular songs ranging from George Michael to R. Kelly. We also know by now that some band’s covers work extremely well and others fall pretty flat. Luckily, when Trampled By Turtles stopped by they played a version of Arcade Fire’s “Rebellion (Lies)” that made you wonder why this wasn’t a bluegrass song to begin with. The band has just released their sixth album, Stars and Satellites, which seems to be just as promising as their ability to cover indie rock songs. Check out their AV Club Undercover video, plus a TV debut performance of their song “Alone” on David Letterman below.
Ruby Coast – Whatever This Is Album Review
Here’s some background on Ruby Coast: they’re 5 dudes from Ontario Canada, they’ve toured with Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club and Ra Ra Riot, their new album was produced by Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire) and Brian Paulson (Wilco, Beck), and they can sneak “No Way Jose” into a song better than most. So now that we have the obligatory introductions out of the way let’s talk about their new album Whatever This Is. A relatively short album with most songs clocking in around 3 minutes long these guys have obviously figured out that being the last person at the party is not a good idea. More often than not the album plugs along at an upbeat pace presenting you with poppy little tunes along the way. They’re not scared of a quick breakdown but try not to take themselves too seriously by always keeping it catchy and fun. Title track “Whatever This Is” is a stand out that will win you over from the first line, “Everything’s fine peachy as a key lime…,” “Stability” kicks off from the first drum beat and “Plasticine” keeps the party going with yet another indie pop gem. Not a game changing album but a nice surprising treat none the less, plus for their first full length album these guys are showing a tremendous amount of promise. I look forward to hearing what else our friends to the North have up their sleeves in the future.
O yea, did I mention that they are giving their entire album away for FREE! Head here for a free download.

Listen to Two New Arcade Fire Singles
Earlier this week, two new singles from Arcade Fire’s upcoming album were debuted; one on Seattle radio 107.7 The End, and another over in the UK by Zane Lowe. Once they were played, it didn’t take long for a radio rip of the songs to make their way around the internet. The two new songs are both streaming below, check them out now before the record label decides to take them down.
The new album “Suburbs” will be release on 8/2 in the U.K., and 8/3 in the U.S.A.
Peter Gabriel to Cover Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Bowie on new LP
Peter Gabriel is finally releasing a new album after a seven year hiatus but it seems he has taken the old adage of sharing to new heights. His newest effort is slotted for release this spring exciting Peter Gabriel fans everywhere (yes there are still a lot of Peter Gabriel fans out there), with a different concept. The title Scratch My Back begins to make sense when you hear that Gabriel has decided to take songs from his favorite artist and turn them into orchestral covers. He has reportedly covered music from classic and indie artists alike, including: Radiohead, David Bowie, Arcade Fire, Talking Heads, The Kinks, Neil Young and Randy Newman. In turn these artist will cover his songs and there you have the old “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours,” way of thinking. While this seems like a pretty interesting idea, and Gabriel is known for his original arrangements, it seems Gabriel may have lost some of his fire. True these are orchestral covers, so they are expected to be slow but the two tracks I heard were like lullabies. I’m certainly not panning anything yet and am still curious about what the final product will be like, but I hope Ol Pete doesn’t drain all the fun out of the music and instead gives us something fresh and original.
