MOR New Tunes Playlist: Volume Six

NewTunes06_400x400Let’s be honest, some playlists are better than others. While we do our best to always choose the best new music around, we don’t always have the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Jack White to choose from. This latest new tunes playlist features the aforementioned Rock Gods and several others who fall firmly into the not-too-shabby category.

Great music all around with some of our favorite songs of the year to date. Choosing tracks from the wonderful Springsteen and Jack White albums was no easy task, but we have had some time to let the dust settle and choose some winners. Rounding out this, our sixth New Tunes Spotify Playlist are Damien Jurado, Michael Kiwanuka, Delta Spirit, Lee Fields, Justin Townes Earle, Zeus, Dr. John, The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, M. Ward, Father John Misty, Turnpike Troubadours, and John Fullbright.

Take some time with these jams and let them settle in, there are some good ones for sure!

Justin Townes Earle Video Teaser

Justin Townes Earle’s new album, Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now might not be due out until the end of March but in true internet form he has released a cool little video to heighten excitement. The video features Earle in the studio churning out some soulful bluesy country tunes in only the way he can. Although we only get a VERY quick taste of the new material, it should be enough to peak interest. Hopefully there will be a full single to listen to soon, but for now enjoy the video below and check out his tour schedule here.

Stream Buddy Holly Tribute Album

It’s been over 52 years since the music died, and that seems like just about the right amount of time to release a tribute to Mr. Buddy Holly.  Concord Music Group has pulled together a star studded 19 track compilation featuring some of today’s most promising indies(My Morning Jacket, Justin Townes Earle, Black Keys), a few legends (Paul McCartney, Patti Smith, Lou Reed), and an inexplicable appearance from Kid Rock.  Stream the new album in the player below.  Enjoy!

Justin Townes Earle @ The Naro Norfolk, VA 4/7

The Naro Cinema in Norfolk is a late 30′s theater that usually plays indie films and movies with subtitles, but on Thursday night it was rocking some serious country tunes. The night opened up with local girl Gina Dalmas and her Cow Tippin’ Playboys who played to the crowd and warmed everyone up with some classic country songs. Most of their lyrics centered around alcohol and the general debauchery that ensues after consuming the former – an idea that the crowd ate right up.

The night then got good as the main event Justin Townes Earle took the stage. Although there was a rather lame introduction which limited Justin’s credits to being Steve Earle’s son and winning best dressed man by GQ magazine, Earle overcame with a vengeance. Justin apologized for his missing fiddle player, who was possibly being arrested at that moment and his bassist who was stuck in Chicago due to bad weather – we were stuck with just him and fortunately that was more than enough. Earle kicked things off with “Move Over Mama,” which is one of my personal favorites and a darn good way to start a show. Upbeat and fun this tune had the crowd eating out of his hand from the moment he crooned, “flat on your back with your legs open wide.”

Since The Naro is just a tiny little theater and Earle was putting on a one man show he never missed an opportunity to display his snarky humor or southern charm while tuning his guitar between songs. We heard about his 6’1″ hard knocks country mama, his tendency to be “a hard dog to keep under the porch,” a New Zealand romance, an ill fated move to NYC and his drug of choice. He turned songs that I barely noticed on an album, like “Ain’t glad I’m Leaving” into highlights and he turned album highlights like “Just Waitin” into absolute winners. Halfway through the show he leaned over the mic and announced that “the great Townes Van Zandt once said, no set is complete without a blues song” and then proceeded to bust out a more than impressive acoustic version of Lightnin’ Hopkin’s “Bad Gasoline.”

By the time he finished his set the crowd was on it’s feet wanting more and more they got. Justin came out for an encore that would satisfy even the most jaded of listeners, kicking it off with Springsteen’s “Racing in the Street” and capping it all off with The Replacements “Can’t Hardy Wait.” “Racing in the Street” was a clear highlight for me and even Bruce would have had to admit that he took a great song and did it justice. All in all there were more upbeat foot taping moments than you would have expected from a small acoustic show but plenty of the subtle heart breaking moments you wanted. From JTE’s goofy dance moves aided by his thin lanky frame, to his earnest sometimes gritty vocals, to his ridiculous guitar skills it was more than worth the ticket price and fairly clear that this guy is pretty talented.

Justin Townes Earle on Letterman

Justin Townes Earle’s new album Harlem River Blues has been a MOR staff favorite since it came out this fall and now he has finally taken his talent to the television airwaves. Justin makes his debut with the title track “Harlem River Blues,” which is a little bit gospel, country roots and Elvis style rock n’ roll – sounds good to me. Throw in a some killer guest play from Late Night’s own Paul Schaffer, and a rather sharply dressed Jason Isbell(who played lead guitar on HRB)) and we’ve got ourselves a winner. Watch JTE and friends rock out below.

Justin Townes Earle “Harlem River Blues” Album Review

It seems like every time I hear someone talk about Justin Townes Earle, he is being introduced with the same few points.  “He’s Steve Earle’s Kid” , “You know he’s named after Townes Van Zandt”,  and  “That guy went to rehab after getting booted from his dad’s band” always preface any discussion about his music.  His latest album removes the need for such an introduction.  Instead, meet Justin Townes Earle – a talented young singer/songwriter with a classic sound and a really good new album called Harlem River Blues.

Harlem River Blues may be short on running time at just over 30 minutes, but Earle’s latest effort is certainly long on range.  The album practically covers the entire canon of  classic American music; flashing shades of Plantation Blues, Muscle Shoals Soul, Dustbowl Folk, and Sun Records era Rock and Roll.   Fortunately, although many of these songs may have their roots in the past, they are alive and well in 2010.  Earle tells contemporary stories in a familiar way, managing to sound authentic and modern while keeping one foot firmly planted in the past.

Justin’s command for songwriting and range as a vocalist shine as this album makes its way from the swampy gospel of the title track opener to the albums closer, ” Rodgers Park” – a dead ringer for classic Whiskeytown.  Despite being pretty much all over the place, the album works surprisingly well as a whole.  Part of that can probably be attributed to the extremely solid performance from Justin and his band which includes former Drive By Trucker Jason Isbell on lead guitar,  Old Crow Medicine Show harp man Ketch Secor, and Calexico’s Paul Niehaus on the pedal steel.  While the album’s consistency and balance may be it’s strongest points, it is not without it’s fair share of highlights.  “Move Over Mama” and “Ain’t Waitin’” are a good time waiting to happen, and “Christchurch Woman” is a mainstream country song done up just right.

Harlem River Blues is a collection of well crafted songs steeped in American music tradition, shined up with Justin’s own unique style.  You can call it alt-country, Americana, or whatever you want to call it, but the latest album from Justin Townes Earle is a rock solid collection of good tunes.

Given Justin Townes Earle’s recent move from his longtime Nashville home to NYC, and the numerous track references to his new digs on his upcoming record (“One More Night in Brooklyn”, “Working For The MTA”, “Harlem River Blues”) many fans are wondering if a big city sound isn’t far behind.  Well, the new album’s first single and title track “Harlem River Blues” sounds a lot more like Nashville than the Big Apple.   The new tune has a big throwback vibe (think Sun Records meets rootsy gospel music), and is certainly worth a turn for fans of the Americana sound.  Stream the song on the player below, and if you like it grab the free MP3 download too!

The new album, Harlem River Blues will be released September 14th.

John Prine Performs With Yim Yames on Letterman

In advance of the release of two new albums, John Prine stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman to perform “All the Best” with My Morning Jacket front man Jim James.   James (or Yames as he is calling himself these days) recorded a version of this track with MMJ for the upcoming Prine tribute album “Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows”.  The album is due out 6/22 and features a slew of great new artists including Josh Ritter, Conor Oberst, Justin Townes Earle, and the Drive By Truckers playing tunes from Prine’s ample songbook.  We really can’t wait to get our hands on the album, but this liver performance serves as a nice hold over.

All Star Lineup for John Prine Tribute Album

One of the many great songwriters to earn the dubious “Next Dylan” moniker early in his career , John Prine has certainly made a name for himself over the last 40 years.  The man has always been able to pen a tune, and now, some of his best are about to be covered by a who’s who of today’s alt-country scene.  Oh Boy Records has just announced Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, set to be released on June 22nd.  Below is a complete track listing of the album.

1. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver – Bruised Orange (Chain Of Sorrow)
